CHAPTER 1.

DAITO 2026 Design Story

image.png

The DAITO Series celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2025 and embarks on a new decade in 2026.

Now in its 11th year, DAITO evolves beyond Japanese sake into a project that celebrates and shares the beauty of Japan’s world-renowned traditional craftsmanship. As the first step in this new journey, we turn our attention to Tokoname ware, a ceramic tradition with over a thousand years of history.

Renowned for bringing out the natural beauty of clay, Tokoname ware has long enriched everyday dining with its simple, functional elegance. Embodying this philosophy is “Shoryu Tenmoku,” a distinctive artistic expression that master ceramicist Shoryu has spent decades perfecting. Its captivating beauty became the inspiration for DAITO2026.

DAITO2026 brings together the timeless beauty of traditional craftsmanship and the master artisan’s relentless pursuit of a brilliance unlike any other. Each creation reveals a unique character, shaped by the natural qualities of clay and the skill of the artisan. This profound beauty reflects the spirit of sake brewing, where mastery is achieved through a deep respect for nature and an unwavering pursuit of perfection.

Born from the meeting of tradition and innovation, ceramics and sake brewing, and the dedication of two master artisans, DAITO2026 is a singular expression of craftsmanship that symbolizes the beginning of DAITO’s next decade.

CHAPTER 2.

About TOKONAMEYAKI

DAITO-cup***.png

TOKONAMEYAKI

A Thousand Years of Japanese Craftsmanship

Located on the western coast of the Chita Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture, Tokoname is one of Japan’s most celebrated pottery regions.

With a history dating back over a thousand years, Tokoname ware is recognized as one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns. For centuries, its artisans have created pottery that reflects the changing needs of everyday life, from traditional vessels and teaware to contemporary ceramics.

The Natural Beauty of Tokoname Clay

The distinctive character of Tokoname ware begins with its clay.

Rich in iron, the local clay develops a beautiful reddish tone when fired. Traditional techniques, including unglazed high-temperature firing, reveal the natural texture and warmth of the earth.

Each piece is shaped by the clay, the artisan’s hands, and the unpredictable movement of fire, creating subtle variations that make every work unique.

Tradition Meets Innovation

While rooted in centuries of tradition, Tokoname ware continues to evolve through contemporary design and artistic expression.

The warmth of the earth, the beauty created by fire, and the skill of the artisan come together in a timeless harmony of nature and craftsmanship.

More than pottery, Tokoname ware embodies a living tradition—one that continues to enrich everyday life while inspiring new forms of Japanese artistry.

SHORYU

Master Ceramic Artist

Born in 1945 in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, Shoryu honed his skills under the guidance of master potter Hokuryu before establishing his own studio, Shoryu Toen, in 1978.

Recognized as a Traditional Craftsman of Japan in 1994, he has continued to honor the heritage of Tokoname ware while pursuing his own distinctive artistic vision and techniques.

His signature creation, “Shoryu Tenmoku,” is the culmination of decades of research and countless experiments. Its intricate, original patterns and deep, lustrous finish reflect his mastery of clay and its expressive possibilities. No two pieces are ever alike, and each reveals a rich variety of expressions as the viewing angle changes.

Beyond its singular beauty, Shoryu's work seamlessly combines artistic elegance with functionality. A pioneer in developing lightweight teapots, he has earned widespread recognition as one of Tokoname's leading ceramic artists.

His numerous honors include the Aichi Prefecture Outstanding Technician Award in 2001, the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award at the Tokoname Ware Promotion Exhibition in 2011, a national commendation for contributions to the traditional crafts industry in 2013, and another Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award in 2014.

In 2017, he was awarded the Medal with Single Ray of the Order of the Sacred Treasure in recognition of his lifelong achievements. His artistry has also received international acclaim, including an Excellence Award at the World Teapot Art Competition in 2019.

“Shoryu Tenmoku” embodies Shoryu's lifelong journey as a ceramic artist — the realization of a vision he had pursued for decades, achieved through tireless experimentation and an unwavering dedication to his craft.
